Athyrium (Japanese Painted Fern)
Deciduous fern with creeping red-brown rhizomes and 2 or 3 pinnate to pinnatifid, lance shaped, arching, silvery gray-green or mid green fronds to 14 inches long, with red-purple midribs. Excellent, tough groundcover. Some morning or afternoon sun assures the most vibrant color. Too much sun will bleach them! Spread via a creeping rhizome. Fertilize during the growing season once a month with a high nitrogen fertilizer. It is a good idea to add humus and to mulch generously.

CULTIVATION: Moist, fertile, humus rich, neutral to acidic soil, enriched with leaf mold or compost.
PROPAGATION: Sow spores as soon as ripe. Plants grown from spores show variable coloration. Hybrids freely with other sthyriums. Divide in spring.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Prone to rust.
