Dianthus (Carnation)
Genus of over 300 species of mostly evergreen, low growing subshrubs, annuals, and biennials that are divided into several sub groups. Carnations and pinks are similar in habit and flower, although, pinks are usually smaller in stature and frequently have fewer petals. Carnations and pinks are grown primarily for their flowers, which are produced in profusion over a long period in spring and summer, and are log lasting when cut. The flowers are often fragrant, and solitary or borne in few to many flowered clusters.

Apr 2006 - Planted around windmill base, by end of season they tripled in width. Alpine Pink 'Neon Star'. Late spring bloomer. Vibrant, florescent pink flowers are absolutely striking against the compact mounding foliage. Wonderful choice for border front or rock garden. Cut flowers are perfect for mini bouquets. Performs well in fast-draining soil amended with small amounts of lime. Remove spent blooms to promote continuous, free-flowering habit. I like the evergreen nature of this plant.

CULTIVATION: Most prefer full sun and well drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Poor drainage especially in winter is the primary cause of failure.
PROPAGATION: Sow seeds of annual, biennials and rock garden species in containers in a cold frame from autumn to early spring. Sow seed of annuals at 55-59F in early spring. take cuttings from nonflowering shoots of all perennial species in summer.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Slugs, sow bugs, grasshoppers, chipmunks, squirrels, and deer are the most common pests. Fungal diseases such as crown rot and rusts are prevalent in humid regions and poorly drained soils.
