return to Perennials
Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light'
Deciduous, clump forming, perennial grass with erect stems and mostly basal, flat, erect or archng, linear, blue-green leaves, to 4 ft long. Pyramidal panicles, to 16 inch long, of silky-hairy, pale gray spikelets, tinted maroon or purple-brown, are produced in autumn. Narrow white leaf margins, giving silvery effect - very nice and maintains erect stance after heavy storms and winds. Requires long, hot summer to produce spikelets. The size and color, make this a favorite.
CULTIVATION: Tolerant of most conditions but best in moderate to fertile, moist but well drained soil in full sun (Mine is in a dry area, and gets not added water from me - and does wonderfully).
PROPAGATION: Sow seed in containers in cold frame in early spring. Divide as new growth commences in spring; old clumps become woody and difficult to divide.
PESTS AND DISEASES: Infrequent.
