Athyrium (Japanese Painted Fern)
Arching fronds are gray-green, brushed to varying degrees with silver and accented with wine-red stems and veins. Some morning or afternoon sun assures the most vibrant color. Too much sun will bleach them! Spread via a creeping rhizome. Can be divided when well established. Fertilize during the growing season once a month with a high nitrogen fertilizer. Will grow in most soils, but prefer average to rich, moist but well-drained media. It is a good idea to add humus and to mulch generously. Well-drained, moist, humus rich soil.
